Commercial boating can take on many different forms. Almost all fishing vessels are deemed to be boats, which implies that almost every fish caught was through the endeavours of a fishing boat, with this kept firmly in mind it is easy to see how commercial boating is huge business. Just through fishing alone, the revenue generated is in the hundreds of billions of dollars bracket. If we add the likes of dive boats, both day boats and liveaboards, and expensive adventure orientated craft, as well as close in shore vessels which service the shipping industry, such as tugs and pilot craft, then we are speaking about one of the largest industries in the world in terms of revenue and turnover.
Certain more specialised forms of commercial boating, such as salvage and exploration, although forming a very small part of the overall picture in regards to number of craft, actually make up a disproportionate amount of the overall industry figures. This is due to the immense expense incurred to fabricate, maintain and operate the specialist equipment found on these vessels. A single salvage boat may well cost over one billion dollars to commission; design, build and equip. ongoing maintenance costs and crew remuneration are also highly disproportionate to the remainder of the commercial boating industry on the whole.
